I checked the ladder again today (no idea why) and found that our guild (RoA) had moved from 102nd to 95th. Looking closer I noticed that KOR and KIN and the other Korean guilds were not on the ladder anymore. Anyone know why?

They were removed from the ladder or had their ratings reset because there is a $30,000 dollar tournament being held in Korea right now. Looks like they play ladder for a while, then cut to top8, and finals take place april 16th.

So basically they get to play all month and for money to boot.

That makes sense, but I wish I got to play for money. ALl GW does for my life is ruin my grades. At least I have fun doing it

It would be nice to have tournaments for money for non-Koreans, but the facts are that there isn't the market for it outside of Korea. Professional gaming(gaming for money) is a big thing there, whereas gaming in general is seen merely as entertainment, and sometimes considered a bad thing in America.... look at all the people claiming that gaming causes violence, etc.

Possibly once the rest of the world catches up to Korea in viewpoint and endorsement of computer gaming, we'll get similar events, but for now, it's not really practical.

I hope they record the matches for the top teams. Seriously, they're already running a 30k tournament, might as well increase publicity and let people who are interested see what the fuss is all about.

That depends; are we talking about North or South Korea?

I'd be interested in participating in an international Guild Wars tournament; if I had to pay any hefty amount for an entrance fee though, I wouldn't go for it, because my guess is that I'd be trounced quite handily, unless I find myself a killer team to work with.

Some Korean guilds will dominate just like some English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, etc guilds will dominate. To anyone who says that Koreans dominate GW, they took all the Korean guilds from the ladder and my guild, ranked 102nd only moved up 7 spots. Only 7 of the top 100 guilds were Korean. Doesn't sound like Korean domination to me.

How close to the top were those 7 guilds? I haven't paid much attention to the ladder, but I've heard people talking about "Korean Domination" as well.

They will have the advantage of having more experience than the other players. They get to play Guild Wars for an extra 3 weeks, and it's more than just a few beta players. They'll have the advantage of being to play competitively for longer than just a weekend, so they may dominate for a little bit, but probably not too long.

KOR and KIN were in the top five (makes sense since they are the same guild) but the others were spread out through out the top 100. I can't remeber their exact places, but only KOR and KIN were in the top 20.

Personally, I'm not so sure that European and North American GW tournaments would be some sort of huge, tragic flop. Sure, the western market doesn't compare to Korea when it comes to games, but the interest is still there. Maybe they'd have to start out on a smaller scale, but I'd be willing to bed they'd draw enough people to be succesful. It's true that I have no information to back this up, but I just don't get the impression that the western market is that insignificant.

i think this is somewhat true
i hear becoming a professional gamer is very hard in korea.
after all....they are encouraged to play games...whereas in here, we have to sacrifice our own time.
as they have lots of sponsors, they sleep, eat, and play.
in here...well, we sleep, eat, work, study, etc.
unless, we give up everything and practice game like 12 hours a day...
have you seen korean people playing starcraft? their hand is so fast that hands are near invisible on keyboard....mouse click? well...it is like 1000 click/sec. lol

i second the vote for someone to record those korean matches... this kinda goes towards a suggestion: is there any way to record ingame matches currently? that would be neat if we could make demos like in CS... if this is already possible someone wanna point me in the direction of where i could find the way to do this?

Also, GW needs a team of 8. One player can train 24/7 and be a good duel player, but where you'll find a 8-player team like that?

Actually, some gosu players have APM 300 (Actions per minute) in Stacraft (at peak times, if someone have average APM 250+ then he just makes a lot of unnecessary clicks/key presses). 5 actions per second is really nice.
But clicking is relatively easy. In Starcraft it's harder to think fast enough where to click than to click that fast. Don't forget that you have a lot of other things to think about at the same time.
